This presentation explores the complex and multilayered ways that individuals can present with self-states that are organized around gendered meanings and fantasies.  Two case examples are discussed which demonstrate different ways that these gendered selves can function to integrate traumatic experience and express, as well as defend against, unbearable affect.

Risa Weinrit, Psy.D. is a psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Needham and Brookline, MA. She is on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis where she has taught courses on gender and psychoanalysis, and is also on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Couples and Family Institute of New England.
